Maybe less than that, but a fifty/fifty chance of reaching an agreement, says Trump to reporters at the White House on Friday before departing for Scotland.

Ursula von der Leyen writes on X that the two have agreed to meet there to discuss "transatlantic trade relations and how they will remain strong".

Intensive negotiations are underway between the EU and the US to reach a trade agreement before the end of the month, when the current tariff pause expires.

At the same time, the EU countries have approved countermeasures against the US tariffs worth over 1,000 billion kronor. These can be implemented if no agreement is reached.

A second package was voted through on Thursday and includes countermeasures of 72 billion euro, plus certain export restrictions. Together with previous packages, this means countermeasures totaling 93 billion euro.

The tactic from the EU's side is to put further pressure on the American administration by presenting new countermeasures, while keeping all doors open for negotiations.
