I think the tariff on copper will be 50 percent, says Trump to reporters in connection with a government meeting in Washington on Tuesday, reports the news agency Bloomberg.
The statement came in connection with him answering questions about whether he still planned tariffs on selected sectors, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and metals.
Copper futures in New York rose by as much as 17 percent after Trump's comments, the largest increase in a day in the statistics since at least 1988.
At the same time, Trump says he will give the pharmaceutical industry between one and one and a half years to move its operations to the USA.
After that, they will be subject to tariffs if they have to import the medicines into the country, the medicines and other things. They will be subject to a very, very high tariff rate, like 200 percent, says Trump.
He has previously pointed out that domestic production of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors is a matter of national security.
