Trump on the 24-hour promise: "I was a bit sarcastic"

USA's President Donald Trump claims that he was "a bit sarcastic" when he promised to put an end to Russia's war in Ukraine within a day. What I meant was that I want to get it resolved, he says in a TV interview.

Prior to the presidential election in the USA, Donald Trump repeatedly promised that he could resolve the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. It has now been almost two months since he became president and the war is still ongoing. He is now being asked about this in an interview on the American TV program "Full Measure".

I was a bit sarcastic when I said that, Trump admits in a preview clip of the program, which will be broadcast on Sunday.

What I really mean is that I want to get it done and I believe I will succeed.

On Thursday evening, the US envoy Steve Witkoff met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss a ceasefire – but the messages from Russia have been cool and contradictory. In the interview, Trump is asked about the plan if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire.

Bad news for our world, as so many people are dying, says Trump.

But I believe he will agree to it. I really believe it. I think I know him quite well and I believe he will agree to it.
