President Trump wrote this on his Truth Social platform.
"Few people in the legal world are as respected as Jay. I urge the U.S. Senate to confirm Jay as soon as possible," Trump wrote.
The current U.S. intelligence director, Tulsi Gabbard, will leave her post on June 19. She previously announced that she was resigning to spend more time with her cancer-stricken husband.
Trump initially appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of intelligence, but the nomination was met with harsh criticism from both Democrats and Republicans because Pulte, who heads the agency that oversees mortgage institutions in the U.S., lacks experience in national intelligence work.
