Few American states have been harder hit by President Donald Trump's import tariffs than Michigan, where unemployment has risen since Trump was sworn in in January.
Despite this – or precisely because of it – it is there, north of Detroit, that the President is celebrating his first 100 days as President in front of his supporters.
Then, Trump will present the presidential order on changes to how the car tariffs he has introduced will be implemented, an order he has already signed.
In brief, it means that car manufacturers will not have to bear the full cost of double tariffs on both imported cars and car parts. The idea, according to American media, is that companies will be reimbursed retroactively for the cars manufactured in the USA.
The order can be seen as Trump backing down somewhat on his decision, but the White House sees the message as a show of strength:
My advice is: Trust President Trump, said press secretary Karoline Leavitt at a press conference earlier on Tuesday.
Trump began his visit to Michigan with a speech at Selfridge Air Base north of Detroit. There, he thanked Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer for good cooperation in preserving the base.
He will later hold a speech at a nearby college on Tuesday evening.
In his speech at the air base, he emphasized Michigan's importance after winning the state both in 2016 and 2024.
This is a special place. I don't forget my friends, he said.
