USA's president Donald Trump claims that India's prime minister Narendra Modi has promised to cease his purchases of Russian oil.

I was not happy that India bought oil and he assured me today that they will not buy oil from Russia. It is a big step. Now I have to get China to do the same thing, says Trump to reporters at a press conference.

Trump says that India cannot stop its oil purchases with immediate effect.

It is a bit of a process, but the process will be over soon.

The relationship between the US and India has been strained lately. This after Trump introduced 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods and raised the fee for a type of work visa that is common among Indian tech employees in the US to 100,000 dollars.

Trump and Modi spoke on the phone last week and the Indian prime minister then said that there are "good progress" in the negotiations between the countries.
