Canada has "discriminated" against goods from the United States such as cars, alcohol and dairy products, Trump claims, having signed an order on the tariffs.
Canada is one of the few countries to have responded to Trump's previous tariffs and must be held accountable, an anonymous government source said.
Some goods, including critical minerals and fish, are excluded from the new tariffs. However, many other goods previously protected by a trade agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico are affected.
The new tariffs will take effect in 30 days, according to the White House.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the announcement in a statement as “the latest in a series of unilateral trade measures by the United States.” He further stated that Canada has provided the United States with several proposals to resolve the trade conflict and “stands ready to intensify those discussions in the coming weeks.”
Just a few days ago, Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canada because of smoke from fires that had drifted across the border into the United States. The cost of pollution in the United States each year will be added to the tariffs that Canada pays, he said at the time.
