Trump's decision comes after a National Guardsman was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night. Following the attack, which is suspected to have been carried out by Afghan man Rahmanullah Lakanwal, Trump ordered that all permanent visas issued to people from "certain countries" be reviewed.
"I will be permanently suspending immigration from developing countries, to give the American system a chance to fully recover," Trump wrote on Friday morning, Swedish time.
In addition to pausing immigration, the American president is also threatening to tear up the visas approved during Joe Biden's term.
"Only re-migration can completely solve this problem," Trump writes.
