The election was extremely close. With 99.9 percent of the votes counted, de la Espriella had 49.7 percent of the vote – which, according to the AFP news agency, is unassailable for leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda, who is at 48.7 percent.
Cepeda says he recognizes the preliminary vote count but wants to wait for a review of the election results, which could take several days. His campaign organization wants the results from about 33,000 ballot boxes to be examined.
The country's National Electoral Council has not yet officially announced a winner.
