In April, Donald Trump was scheduled to speak for the first time as president at the annual Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. But when a gunman managed to rush past a security checkpoint in the building, drama erupted that led to the president being taken to safety.
On Saturday night, Swedish time, the dinner was held again.
"There are a lot of outstanding people here. I don't like them all, but I respect most of them," Trump said.
After a more light-hearted introduction, Trump moved on in his speech to criticizing and naming individual journalists who had reported critically about him.
Voices within the journalistic profession have criticized the arrangement because the current government has introduced rules that restrict journalists' freedom of movement and press.
The sit-down with Trump is defended by organizer Weijia Jiang.
"We are celebrating the 250th anniversary of democracy. Of all the years, this was not the year we should let the celebration of the First Amendment be taken away from us. More than ever, we must cherish the freedoms that make us who we are," she told CNN.
The dinner was held at a different hotel this time. On the previous occasion, in April, gunfire erupted in the building as the gunman attempted to enter the ballroom. He is now in custody on charges including attempted assassination of the president.
