Donald Trump is furious about a new opinion poll and says he is expanding his lawsuit against The New York Times.

The newspaper published an opinion poll on Thursday in which the US president only receives approval from 40 percent of respondents.

Trump thunders on Truth Social that it's a far too low figure, writing that the investigation adds to the defamation lawsuit he has already been pursuing in Florida.

"They should be held fully accountable for all their lies from the radical left," he writes, and he believes that "fake" opinion polls should be criminalized.

In October, Trump sued The New York Times for $15 billion for defamation; that lawsuit was filed after a similar one was dismissed.

The results of the current survey are in line with those of other surveys.
