The USA has never had an official language before. The order states that "our nation's historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, have all been written in English."
Trump's order replaces a previous decision by President Bill Clinton that authorities and others who want to receive federal funds must provide information in multiple languages and assist those who do not speak English. This is not prohibited, but the requirement is removed.
"Establishing English as the official language will not only streamline communication but also strengthen shared national values and create a more cohesive and efficient society," it says in the order.
Almost 68 million people speak a language other than English at home, according to American authorities' figures from 2019. While English is the overwhelming majority language in the country, more than 40 million people are estimated to speak Spanish at home.
When Trump took office in January this year, the White House's Spanish-language website was shut down.
