During yesterday's meeting, Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. Trump has repeatedly urged China to lie to Iran about the situation around the strait and the ceasefire.
Ahead of Friday's meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the matter. Beijing said that trade routes through the strait, through which much of the world's oil passes, must be opened "as soon as possible."
"A comprehensive and lasting ceasefire should be reached as soon as possible to enable the restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region," the ministry wrote in a statement, according to AFP.
The issue of Iran's nuclear program has been a major part of the negotiations between the United States and Iran. Earlier in the day, Donald Trump gave an interview in which he appeared to downplay the importance of securing the nuclear waste that remains in Iran.
It would have felt better if we had it, but I think it's more for PR reasons than anything else, Trump said in the interview.
"We could bomb it again. But it would feel better if we got it, and we will get it," the president added.
The US bombed three nuclear facilities in June last year and has since claimed that they were completely destroyed.
