"He (Xi) feels strongly that they cannot have nuclear weapons, and he wants them to open the strait," Trump told reporters aboard the presidential plane on Friday.

China's Foreign Ministry has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in connection with the U.S. state visit. Trump has previously said that he and Xi agreed to keep the strait open.

Beijing said in a statement that the trade routes through the strait, where a large part of the world's oil passes, must be opened "as quickly as possible."

"A comprehensive and lasting ceasefire should be reached as soon as possible to enable the restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region," the U.S. State Department wrote in a statement.

The issue of Iran's nuclear program has been a major part of the negotiations between the United States and Iran. In an interview on Thursday, Trump appeared to downplay the importance of obtaining the enriched uranium that remains in Iran.

"It would have felt better if we had it, but I think it's more for PR reasons than anything else," Trump said in the interview.

"We could bomb it again. But it would feel better if we got it, and we will get it," the president added.

The U.S. bombed three nuclear facilities in June last year and has since claimed that they were completely destroyed.
