Trump's three "finalists" to take over the post of head of the US central bank are the White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, Fed member Christopher Waller and the former Fed member Kevin Warsh.
"You can say that they are the three foremost", said Trump to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House.
Previously, Trump has hinted that he has a certain notion of who he wants to choose for the position, but he has also said that interviews will be conducted. According to media reports, the president's list initially contained eleven names.
Powell has been the head of the Federal Reserve (Fed) since 2018, and was nominated to the post by Trump during his first presidential term, but that term expires in May. Powell has been repeatedly attacked by Trump in harsh terms for not lowering interest rates.
