Trump Claims Los Angeles Is Invaded by Foreign Enemy

California Governor Gavin Newsom has asked a court to block Donald Trump's "unlawful" deployment of the Marine Corps and the National Guard in Los Angeles. The President claims that the city is invaded by a "foreign enemy" and threatens to invoke the law that gives him the right to deploy the military.

Newsom requests that a federal court expedite the issuance of a temporary injunction that prevents the president from deploying National Guard and Marine Corps soldiers in Los Angeles.

The governor's move comes after Trump called in thousands of National Guard troops against the protesters in Los Angeles and ordered 700 Marine Corps soldiers to support them.

Donald Trump behaves like a tyrant, not like a president. We ask the court to immediately block these illegal actions, says Newsom, adding that Trump's actions "threaten the core" of the US democracy.

Two lawsuits

On Monday, Gavin Newsom sued the government for a constitutional violation for the decision to deploy the National Guard.

The National Guard was deployed to protect federal buildings. According to Tuesday's court request, California's military department has been informed that the Pentagon plans to allow the guardsmen to support ICE raids on undocumented immigrants, writes AP.

The support would consist of securing areas and streets for ICE personnel.

Donald Trump says during a speech at a military base in North Carolina that Los Angeles is invaded by a "foreign enemy" and that there is a "complete attack" from rioters carrying "foreign flags with the goal of continuing a foreign invasion of our country."

The president has previously been asked if he can consider invoking the US Insurrection Act, which gives the president the power to deploy military to quell riots or, under certain circumstances, maintain law and order, and replied that he can consider "soldiers everywhere."

On Tuesday, he writes on Truth Social that if there is a riot, "I would really invoke it."

Curfew

The massive protests that have been ongoing in Los Angeles since Friday are directed against ICE's escalated raids on residents in areas dominated by Latin Americans.

The demonstrations have spread across the country and on Tuesday, protests are planned in New York, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta, writes NBC News.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says she is considering imposing a curfew in the city's central areas. At the same time, she condemns Trump's decision to send soldiers to the city.

People have asked me what the Marine Corps soldiers will do when they come here. That's a good question. I have no idea, she says.
