The current pause expires on July 9 and according to Trump, letters with information about penalty tariffs will start being sent to countries that have not entered into new trade agreements with the US "pretty soon".

We will look at how countries treat us - if they are good or not so good - and with some countries we do not care, we will just send out a high figure, says Trump to Fox News.

The content of the letters, according to the president:

Congratulations, we let you trade in the US, you will pay 25 percent tariffs, or 35 or 50 or 10 percent.

Tariff negotiations are underway with, among others, the EU. To Bloomberg, EU sources said on Friday that they hoped for an extended negotiating period beyond July 9, when Trump has threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on almost all exports from the EU to the US if no agreement is reached.

Earlier in the week, the White House indicated, according to several media outlets, that an extension could be relevant.
