The decision to investigate, among others, Democratic ex-President Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Linkedin founder Reid Hoffman, who have donated large sums to Democrats, was announced by Trump in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday evening.
In the post, the president accuses his political opponents of "using the Epstein hoax" to "shift focus" from his own failures, which is why he has asked Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice to launch an investigation.
The proceedings follow the tens of thousands of new documents in the extensive tangle surrounding Epstein that were made public earlier this week.
Among the documents were emails between Epstein and author Michael Wolff in which Epstein wrote that Trump "of course knew about the girls."
Both the White House and Trump have denied that the president had anything to do with the shady part of the convicted sex offender's activities.
Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein had a long-standing friendship and hung out in both New York and Florida, but according to Trump, things fell out between them in the mid-2000s.
Bill Clinton also knew Epstein, as did Larry Summers.
