The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has been in negotiations with party colleagues on Thursday to reach a new agreement, since the US President-elect Donald Trump refused to accept the proposed agreement between Republicans and Democrats in Congress. Trump's rejection on Wednesday of the budget agreement received support from his friend and adviser Elon Musk.
The Republicans have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
The details of a potential new agreement were unclear on Thursday evening, but Trump claimed that the Republicans had managed to rally behind a new budget proposal:
"Success in Washington" Trump wrote on social media and claimed that the US would abolish the debt ceiling for two years – which the Republicans had previously completely opposed.
The Democrats are criticizing both Trump's attack on the previous agreement, which caused it to collapse, and the way the President-elect is treating Congress. Even Republicans are following the developments in Washington with interest.
"Stay tuned. Fasten your seatbelts. The next Congress will be interesting to follow", noted Republican Steve Womack, a member of the House of Representatives from the state of Arkansas.
