“The only control or 'guardrail' that AI needs is a strong and smart (high IQ) president and the United States has that, in abundance!” Trump writes in a post on Truth Social.
He says it is crucial to allow unfettered technological development to "win" over China.
The move is the latest example of the US president downplaying the need to slow down AI, something several industry leaders - including OpenAI's Sam Altman, entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei - have called for in recent days, citing security risks.
In the post, Donald Trump specifically points out Amodei and Anthropic, with whom the Pentagon has tried to break contracts since the company came into conflict with the Department of Defense.
In a later post on the same theme, Trump dismisses warnings from several AI experts that the technology could pose a danger to humanity as a hoax.
“AI taking over the world, wiping out humanity, and all the other bad things, is a hoax,” the president writes.
Concerns about uncontrolled AI development have been growing recently. The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on the technology next week, a French diplomatic source said.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk is also urging countries and tech companies to act urgently to curb the development.
For Trump, however, the most important thing is to win the fight over AI.
"Whoever wins AI, wins! We are leading against China and everyone else, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy theorists, traitors and leakers, beware!", he writes on his platform.
