Under the plan, Trump was to visit Beijing from March 31 to April 2.
"Because of the war, I want to be here, I feel like I need to be here. So we've asked to postpone it for a month or so," Trump told reporters at the White House.
The president further said that the two countries have a very good relationship.
"There's no game about it. It's not like, 'Oh no, I'll wait.' It's very simple. It's a war going on."
Trump has previously warned that the meeting with Xi Jinping could be delayed if China does not help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
