The USA's tariffs on Chinese goods at 145 percent are a "very high level", says President Donald Trump – and adds that the level will be "significantly reduced".

It will not be close to that figure, he says to reporters, but adds that it will not be zero either.

The statement comes after reports that the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent at a meeting for investors is said to have stated that the trade war against China is unsustainable and that he expects the situation to be toned down.

Bessent is said to have stated that the actual negotiations with China will be "a grind", but considering today's tariff levels, neither of the countries believes that "status quo is sustainable".

Donald Trump, however, avoided confirming whether he also sees the current situation – where China has responded with its own tariffs of 125 percent on American goods – as unsustainable. Instead, he emphasizes that the US is doing well with China.

We will live together very happily and preferably work together, says the President.
