US President Donald Trump announces a large-scale investment in a battleship, bigger and better than any previous battleship built - and to be called Trump.

There was a lot of attention ahead of the appearance with Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Monday evening.

Waiting reporters didn't know whether the Trump administration would announce news about the intensifying conflict with Venezuela, where the US Coast Guard and military are pursuing merchant ships suspected of transporting oil from Venezuela, or the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or about documents from the investigations of convicted sex offender, now dead, Jeffrey Epstein.

But Trump chose to announce that an American warship will be built, in a new class called the Trump Class, and he showed a picture of what the new battleship USS Defiant will look like.

"It will be the largest warship in the history of our country, the largest warship ever built in the history of the world," Trump said.

The appearance came after Trump met with the country's national security leadership at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The United States currently has the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the USS Gerald Ford. One of the largest battleships ever built was the Japanese battleship Yamato, launched in 1940. It sank in a naval battle in April 1945.
