"We agreed that Ukraine and the USA will continue to work together to achieve a real end to the war and reach a lasting peace", writes Zelenskyj on X after having spoken on the phone with Trump on Wednesday evening.
Trump says on Truth Social that "they are on the right track" and that much of the conversation with Zelenskyj concerned the talks he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
Stop to attacks
In the talks, Trump agreed with Putin on a month-long ceasefire regarding attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyj says he supports the proposal.
"One of the first steps towards a total end to the war can be to stop the attacks on energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure. I supported this step and Ukraine is ready to implement it", he writes on X.
Trump is also said to have proposed to Zelenskyj an "American ownership" of Ukrainian energy infrastructure to help the country, according to a statement by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
American ownership of the facilities could be the best protection of that infrastructure and could support Ukraine's energy infrastructure, says White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt at a press conference.
Heated exchange of words
Zelenskyj reports on X that he and Trump also discussed the situation at the front in Ukraine in the Russian invasion war and in the Russian Kursk region. The two are also said to have touched on the release of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russian forces.
"We also discussed Ukraine's air defense and the possibility of strengthening it to protect human lives", he says.
As far as is known, Zelenskyj and Trump have not spoken to each other since the Ukrainian leader visited the White House at the end of February. Then, a heated exchange of words broke out and Zelenskyj left the USA prematurely, without signing an agreement on the extraction of rare earth metals as planned.
Since then, other representatives of the two countries have met in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine has also given the green light to an American proposal for a temporary ceasefire in Russia's war of aggression for 30 days.
