Trump Declines Tariff Relief for Norway, Suggests Higher Payments

They have a fantastic fund, it's a large fund, and they have no debts, so I think they are probably willing to pay us more than that, I hope, says Trump at a press conference in the Oval Office, referring to the Norwegian oil fund.

Before the US introduced a 90-day tariff pause earlier in April, the country's tariff on Norwegian goods had been raised to 15 percent.

"A smart nation"

Trump also says that he thinks the US is "getting along very well" with Norway regarding trade. Before the meeting, Trump said that he actually sees Norway as a potential ally in the tariff and trade war.

I would be interested in being an ally with Norway. We are interested in the best trade deals, and Norwegians are great businessmen. They are a smart nation, a well-governed nation.

Støre pointed out that this year marks 200 years since the first organized emigration of Norwegians to the US.

I set great value on the tone of this meeting, which has been a confirmation of a very good cooperation. Thank you very much, says the Prime Minister.

Besides trade, Ukraine was also discussed.

Full of praise

When Trump first received Støre, he was full of praise.

It's a great honor to have the highly respected, fantastic Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Norway with us here today, said Trump at an initial press conference.

Also present was Norway's Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg. In addition to Trump, the Norwegians have met, among others, the US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.

Trump called the former NATO chief Stoltenberg "my good friend".

You did a fantastic job, and thank you very much for that.
