Trump and Putin Discuss Ukraine Conflict No Peace Achieved

Donald Trump has spoken with Vladimir Putin about, among other things, the situation in Ukraine. ”It was a good conversation, but it was not a conversation that leads to immediate peace”, wrote US President Trump on Truth Social after the phone call with the Russian leader. At the same time, the Kremlin announces that Putin has spoken with Pope Leo.

The conversation lasted for over an hour and is said to have included the latest Ukrainian attack on Russian air bases. According to Trump, Putin emphasized that Russia will respond to the attack.

The American president pointed out in the conversation that he was not aware of the attack in advance, says Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, according to AFP. He also describes the conversation as "positive" and "productive".

Trump also wrote that Putin suggested that he could personally participate in negotiations on Iran and the country's nuclear energy program.

"I told President Putin that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and I think we agreed on that," Trump writes and expresses that Iran has been slow to make a decision and that "we need a definitive answer in a very near future".

Putin rejected ceasefire

Trump removed his post on the Truth Social platform after about an hour, but republished it shortly afterwards.

The conversation followed a day when Putin made several statements. In a televised government meeting in Moscow, he rejected any idea of a ceasefire in the invasion war in Ukraine.

A ceasefire would only benefit Ukraine, which would be able to mobilize additional forces, he claimed.

Why give them the advantage of a pause in the fighting, which they (Ukraine) would use to strengthen their regime with the help of weapons from Western countries, strengthen their military and prepare various terrorist acts, Putin said during the meeting at the Kremlin.

Putin also accused Ukraine of disrupting "peace talks" by carrying out drone attacks on Russian air bases.

Putin spoke with the Pope

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesperson Omer Celik, the country is ready to host a summit between Trump and Putin, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

The Kremlin also announced that Putin had a telephone conversation with Pope Leo XIV. The Pope has also offered to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, which Putin is said to have thanked him for during the conversation.

The two are said to have discussed, among other things, the recent attacks and the agreements reached in Istanbul earlier in the week.
