Trump wrote on Truth Social that "we agreed on many things" after the conversation on Friday.
Prime Minister Carney stated in an official statement that he appreciated the conversation:
"It was a very constructive conversation about the relationship between our two countries."
The Prime Minister emphasized, however, that Canada will retaliate with tariffs if the USA introduces such measures.
Tense relationship
The relationship between Canada and the USA is very tense since Trump said that Canada should become a state in the USA, and threatened with significantly increased trade tariffs to take effect on April 3.
The Canadian media noted a change in tone - compared to the conversations with the former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump called Trudeau "governor", but used the correct title Prime Minister when addressing Carney.
Trump also mocked the former Canadian leader Trudeau both publicly and privately, despite saying that a meeting with Trudeau at the presidential residence Mar-a-Lago was "very productive".
Marked against Trump
Carney marked himself against Trump as late as on Thursday, when he said at a press conference, according to the Canadian public service company CBC:
The old relationship we had with the USA based on a deepened integration of our economies and close cooperation on security and military is over.
Carney succeeded the former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier in March. He then broke a tradition when he chose not to let his first foreign trip go to the USA, but instead opted for a visit to Europe with stops in Paris and London.
Canada is going to the polls on April 28.
