The Trump administration is considering becoming a part-owner of major American defense companies such as Lockheed Martin, according to the US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.

The statement is made in an interview with the TV channel CNBC since the US government just a few days ago bought a ten percent share in the technology company Intel for about 9 billion dollars.

The defense conglomerate Lockheed Martin is already "basically a part of the US government", according to Lutnick. However, he adds that he does not know if such a government investment is economically justifiable.

He adds that the issue is handled by Defense Minister Pete Hegseth and Deputy Defense Minister Steve Feinberg.

They are on it and they are considering it, says Lutnick to CNBC.

Lockheed Martin is the world's largest company in the defense industry. Other major companies in the defense industrial segment are RTX, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Boeing.
