Education Minister Linda McMahon writes in an open letter to Harvard's rector that the university should no longer seek state grants "since none will be given”.

The main reason is a long list of demands from the Trump administration that the university has refused to meet, including that universities should accept state supervision of their admissions, employment methods, and political orientation.

In early April, US President Donald Trump announced that state grants of $2.2 billion (equivalent to approximately 21.4 billion kronor) to the university would be frozen.

The latest move comes simultaneously as Trump cracks down on American universities on several fronts. The government has threatened, among other things, state grants, which has led to concerns about reduced academic freedom.
