The double Olympic Games silver medalist Truls Möregårdh defeated the world number one Lin Shidong with 4–3 in sets in a highly dramatic final of the major tournament Europe Smash in Malmö arena on Sunday.

The four Grand Smash tournaments on the world tour are the competitions that provide the most ranking points and with 2,000 earned points Möregårdh is now world number five.

Besides passing the Chinese Liang Jingkun, Möregårdh also passes the Frenchman Félix Lebrun on the list, which makes the Swede currently the best in Europe.

At best, Truls Möregårdh has been ranked as world number three, which he was in the autumn of 2022.

Despite the loss, Lin Shidong is still world number one – he tops the ranking ahead of his compatriot Wang Chuqin, who did not play in Malmö. Behind them are Tomakazu Harimoto, Japan, and Hugo Calderano, Brazil.
