Truls' competitor boycotts the World Championship tour

The World Tour in table tennis has been hit by two heavy setbacks. The Chinese Olympic gold winners Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng both announce that they are quitting the tour. How it will affect their national team careers and play in the World Championship and Olympic Games is unclear.

Fan Zhendong is well-known to those who followed Truls Möregårdh's progress during the Olympic Games in Paris last summer. The two met in the final, which the Swede eventually lost.

On the women's side, Chen Meng won Olympic gold during the championship.

The fact that both stars choose to leave the world tour also means that they will lose their world ranking.

Fan Zhendong writes on the social media platform Weibo that the reason he is quitting competing on the world tour is due to new rules that require players to be fined if they miss tournaments.

"Recently, WTT (World Table Tennis) issued a new rule that fines will be imposed if you don't participate. I'm not willing to accept it, but I respect the international organizations, so the only thing I can do is choose to withdraw," he writes.

"I'm still me, I won't retire, I'll continue to work hard to participate in more different tournaments," added the 27-year-old.

He did not participate in the latest WTT finals held in Japan in November and has not played in world tour competitions since June.
