Trier's previous film "The Worst Person in the World" also received two nominations in 2022. That time there were no Oscars - but now expectations are even higher, with "Sentimental Value" having a chance in as many as nine categories, including Best Picture.
"I absolutely did not expect that, and I am incredibly grateful and happy that it happened," says Joachim Trier in an interview with the news agency NTB.
After "The Worst Person in the World," it felt like the pressure was enormous.
"Of course, that made us very nervous," says Trier.
But he and the team stuck to the method he had always had - making films about what was closest to his heart, here and now.
It's a philosophy we've stuck to throughout all the films.
He compares it to a band that continues to stick to its style and its own way of doing things.
We're very proud of it, and happy that people are responding to it. Being nominated for Best Picture is an absolutely amazing experience.
The Oscars will take place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
