The trial against three former police officers who were convicted of involvement in the fatal assault of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, USA 2023 is being retried, according to American media.

Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, was assaulted by five police officers during an intervention in Memphis after being stopped suspected of reckless driving. He died three days later and the cause of death was head injuries.

A federal judge has decided that the trial will be retried because the judge who held the trial afterwards is said to have hinted that one of the accused was a gang member. The judge is also said to have stated that the entire Memphis police force is "infiltrated" all the way up to the top layer of gang members, according to documents that The New York Times reports on.

According to the Department of Justice, there is no evidence that any of those accused of involvement in the Tyre Nichols case, or anyone else within the Memphis police force, is a gang member.
