The new rules, which stop trans people from playing, are a consequence of a decision in the highest court in the UK on April 16.

"This is a complex issue, and our stance has always been that if there is a significant change in the law, science, or application of the policy within association football, we would review it and change it if needed", FA writes on its website.

FA also writes:

"We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the sport they love in the gender they identify as, and we are now contacting the registered trans women who are currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to be involved in the sport".

The issue of gender affiliation and trans people's rights in sports has been debated in recent years and several sports have reviewed their regulations.

According to the International Swimming Federation's trans rules, which were introduced just in 2022, for example, a person born as a man must have undergone gender correction before the age of 12 to be allowed to compete with women. The International Athletics Federation is another federation that has stopped trans people in women's classes.
