Tranemo municipality in Västergötland introduces free preschool in 2026, reports P4 Sjuhärad. The proposal is included in the majority's budget for next year.

For a family with two children in preschool, it will be a saving of approximately 30,000 kronor per year.

We do it because we see that we are becoming fewer and fewer in the municipality, we want to try to reverse that trend, says the chairman of the municipal board Driton Bilali (S).

The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, SKR, is not aware that any other municipality has introduced anything similar. However, Haparanda municipality introduced free preschool as early as 2007, but it was abolished in 2019.

According to Bilali, the investment in Tranemo is possible because the municipality has managed its economy well for several years.

Corrected: In an earlier version, it appeared that Tranemo municipality was the first in the country to introduce free preschool.
