Welsh is writing both the music and the script for the production, which opens in the West End on July 15.
The novel about heroin addicts in Edinburgh was published in 1993. Three years later, Danny Boyle's Oscar-nominated film version was released, and several of the songs from the soundtrack appear in the musical, NME reports.
"Trainspotting" has previously been staged in theatrical versions, but not as a full-scale musical.
