The accident occurred early Thursday afternoon. About ten wagons on the long train derailed.

The Swedish Transport Administration's personnel were sent to the accident site and were able to determine, among other things, that a number of utility poles and overhead lines had been damaged or fallen.

The damage will be assessed in the coming days. The Swedish Transport Administration points out that the terrain is difficult to access and that a large number of wagons have derailed.

"A very rough estimate at such an early stage is that the clearance and restoration work is expected to take approximately two weeks," says Hanna Ekberg, section manager at the Swedish Transport Administration, in a press release .

The cause of the derailment is believed to be a sun kink.

There is no forecast for when trains will be able to run on the route again.

Stoppage in train traffic

The derailment has halted train traffic between Borås and Gothenburg. There is also a halt to train traffic on the Gothenburg–Stockholm and Gothenburg–Kalmar routes.

All departures are affected, says Felicia Palombo Daging of SJ's press service to TT.

She says SJ is working to provide replacement traffic and has also applied to reroute trains.

A total of 19 departures were affected on Thursday. Work is underway to plan traffic for Friday.

In the morning, on the Gothenburg to Stockholm route, we will be able to run two or three trains via Öxnered. And in the afternoon it will be the same thing but in reverse, from Stockholm to Gothenburg, says Felicia Palombo Daging.

Ran a different route

The reason train traffic between Gothenburg and Stockholm is affected is that trains are running on a different route due to track work on the Western Main Line, several media outlets report.

In addition to SJ's trains, several West trains have been cancelled.

No one was injured in the derailment, and there were no dangerous goods in the train's cargo, according to the police.
