The tragedy occurred during a school competition in a large indoor facility at the University of Colorado on Sunday.
The hammer came out of the throwing sector, passed a protective barrier and hit the spectator. Medical personnel tried to save the man's life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased man was the father of one of the competing athletes, who attends a local high school.
