TEXT: SMHI has issued several orange-level snow warnings across the country - partly covering the Gothenburg area and Bohuslän, and partly between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall. Heavy snowfall is also expected in Västernorrland on Thursday. The storm led to chaos in public transport on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening, larger amounts of snow are expected in Bohuslän, where SMHI has issued an orange warning from 9 p.m.

The orange warning was extended this afternoon and also applies to the Gothenburg area. Until Thursday morning, heavy snowfall amounts locally could reach up to 30 centimeters, SMHI warns.

This is because it has already been quite difficult there with the heavy snowstorms that came during the night into Wednesday, says Max Schildt, meteorologist at SMHI.

Traffic problems

Several traffic accidents were reported on Wednesday. Public transport has had major problems and for a while all trams were at a standstill.

You should think about whether you should go out at all in the near future, says Schildt.

A yellow warning is also in effect for northwestern Götaland and southwestern Svealand until 12 noon on Thursday. Up to 20 centimeters of snow is expected locally.

Storm in the north

During the morning, SMHI upgraded a previous yellow warning for part of southern Norrland to orange level. Until 11 p.m., the area between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall may receive between 25 and 40 centimeters of snow. In addition, an orange warning of heavy snowfall has been issued for Västernorrland County throughout Thursday until Friday morning.

There is a risk of power outages and disruptions in the telecommunications network. Gävleborg has continued to be affected by power outages since previous storms - around 700 of Ellevio's customers in the area were without power on Wednesday afternoon.

The Swedish Transport Administration has reduced train traffic between Sundsvall and Gävle. Most of the X trains are therefore cancelled, the company announces on its website. In northern Norrland, Norrtåg has cancelled its trips between Kiruna and Luleå due to cold weather.

SMHI has three levels of weather warnings:

Yellow warning: Consequences for society, some risks to the public.

Orange warning: Serious consequences for society, danger to the public.

Red alert: Very serious consequences for society, great danger to the public.
