For the first half of this year, Toyota is expected to report US sales of about 1.25 million vehicles, an increase of almost 1 percent.
GM, in turn, is expected to report a decline of just over 7 percent during the same period, to 1.33 million vehicles, according to a forecast by industry firm Cox Automotive, CNBC reports.
By the end of this year, Toyota could potentially overtake GM as the best-selling manufacturer in the US market, according to Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive.
He added that the trend is “worrying for General Motors.”
