The accident happened on Wednesday morning at Mount Ololokwe in Samburu, about 350 kilometres from the capital, Nairobi. It occurred after the helicopter took off from the Loisaba Game Reserve.
There were seven people on board the helicopter, a pilot and six passengers, said Fredrick Kabunge, who heads Kenya's aviation safety authority AAID.
In addition to Ecuador's intelligence chief and his wife, there were five American citizens on board the helicopter, according to the US Embassy in Nairobi. Among them were two representatives of the media company Telemundo.
