Several stages of the Tour of Spain have been affected by large pro-Palestinian protests. Stages have had to be rerouted and shortened, and crashes have been caused.
The protests have come since an Israeli team, Israel-Premier Tech, has been allowed to compete in the Tour of Spain. Something that has been criticized given the ongoing war in Gaza.
During the cycling competition's final stage on Sunday, large demonstrations broke out in the Spanish capital, with thousands of demonstrators participating. They are said to have, among other things, pushed down barriers, entered the intended cycling route and blocked the road, and triggered smoke bombs.
Clashes between police and demonstrators are also said to have taken place.
The Spanish authorities expected protests and sent 1,100 police officers to monitor the cycling competition. But it was not enough to stop them.
The demonstrations were so extensive that the organizers decided to interrupt the final stage.
This means that the Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, who rides for Visma, wins the competition. It is the first time a Dane wins the "Vueltan". But it is unclear whether it will be possible to hold a victory ceremony due to the protests.
