Earlier this month, the 28-year-old won the time trial and road race at Colombia's national championships, and it was Bernal's first victories since he almost lost his life in an accident during training in January 2022.
Then, Bernal cycled into a stationary bus at home in the capital Bogotá. He broke several ribs, a kneecap, a femur, two vertebrae, and got a punctured lung.
I almost died, but I thank God for this test, said Bernal after the accident.
In the spring of 2021, Egan Bernal also took home the overall victory in the Giro d'Italia.
