Tougher deportation rules hammered out in the European Parliament

The new so-called return regulation passed with 418 votes in favor, 218 against, and 30 abstentions. Afterwards, the far-right parties celebrated by shouting "Send them back!" in chorus.

"From now on, the signal is clear: If you enter Europe illegally, Europe will never be your home," writes Charlie Weimers (SD) in a written comment to TT.

The 'no' side is all the more bleak.

"Children fleeing war and persecution need safety, not more walls and detention centers," writes Alice Bah Kuhnke (MP) in a text message.

Among Swedish parties, SD, M and KD voted yes, while C, L, MP and V voted no. S abstained.
