Toronto captain Matthews, who recently won Olympic gold in ice hockey for the United States, suffered a knee injury after a high hit in the NHL game against Anaheim on Friday night.
Matthews is reported to have suffered ligament problems in his left knee in the incident.
Anaheim defender Radko Gudas received a match penalty after the hit.
