The MLS players' union has published its list of players' earnings in the league and Inter Miami's Lionel Messi tops it in superior style.
With a guaranteed annual salary of just over $20.4 million, the 38-year-old clearly earns much more than second-placed Son Heung-Min, who is guaranteed an income of just over $11.1 million (around SEK 104 million). Son left Tottenham for Los Angeles FC last summer in what was reportedly the most expensive transfer in North American professional football. The transfer fee was just over SEK 243 million (USD 26 million).
Emil Forsberg earns around 56.5 million kronor ($6 million) per year at the New York Red Bulls, making him the sixth highest-paid MLS player.
Third on the list is Spaniard Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami, with an annual salary of 82 million kronor.
Busquets is leaving after the season, but Messi recently signed a new three-year deal with Miami. The value of that contract is not yet known.
For example, the guaranteed annual income does not include sponsorship agreements.
