"Senate Democrats will introduce legislation to block these tariffs before they cause further harm to the American economy and our allies in Europe," Schumer said in a statement, according to The Hill.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump threatened eight countries in Europe - including Sweden - with punitive tariffs of 10 percent from February 1. The countries have all sent military personnel to Greenland, and Trump said the tariffs would be increased to 25 percent on June 1 if the United States is not allowed to buy Greenland before then.
Chuck Schumer called Trump's tariffs "reckless."
"It is astonishing that he is compounding his stupidity by imposing tariffs on our closest allies because of his delusional idea of taking over Greenland," Schumer said in the statement.
In addition to Sweden, the tariff threat also applies to Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
"This is a very dangerous situation for the safety, security, and survival of our planet. These countries, playing a very dangerous game, have taken a great risk that is neither sustainable nor defensible," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday.
