A Danish man has been sentenced to one year in prison after taking his brother's place in custody.

It all happened in the summer of 2021, when both brothers were arrested on suspicion of smuggling 300 kilos of cocaine into Denmark. They shared a cell, and when the now convicted man was to be released due to lack of evidence, he instead let his brother leave the detention center – without the police discovering anything.

The brother, who remained a suspect, was able to flee the country and is still at large. He is believed to still be abroad and is on Europol's list of Europe's most wanted criminals.

Last year, twelve other people were sentenced to prison terms of up to 16 years for their involvement in cocaine smuggling.
