Tommy Samuelsson appointed Denmark hockey coach on two-year deal

Denmark has appointed a new national ice hockey coach. It is, of course, a Swede. Tommy Samuelsson, 66, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Danish federation.

Denmark has a long tradition of having a Swede lead the national ice hockey team. Five of the last seven national team coaches have come from Sweden, and Samuelsson now succeeds Mikael Gath, who has held the job for the past three seasons.

Samuelsson has extensive experience as both player and coach. Last season he coached Timrå in the SHL, but as early as January the two sides agreed to part ways and that Samuelsson would retire. Then came the offer from Denmark.

"Coaching a national team at this level is a dream for me," Samuelsson says in a press release.

Denmark's best result is fourth place at the World Cup. At the World Cup last spring, the team finished 12th.
