The film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, received a zero rating in Dagens Nyheter, whose critics described it as a failed attempt to make a fuss out of an environmental disaster. Aftonbladet's critics, on the other hand, gave it a four rating and thought that Tom Cruise plays his "meatiest role in a long time" as Digger Rockwell, an aging oil mogul whose irresponsible oil drilling threatens to destroy all of Europe.
In North America, "Digger" grossed $3.4 million in 3,321 theaters on opening night, but that's not nearly enough, according to Variety, whose "knowledgeable sources" state that the film's production costs came to between $1.6 billion and $1.8 billion.
