According to a local official, more than half of all homes rented to tourists, including via Airbnb, will no longer be allowed to be rented out under new rules that will be announced shortly.
Shinjuku, known as the administrative and commercial heart of the Japanese capital, receives tens of thousands of tourists each year.
The new regulations are being introduced after a growing number of complaints about visitors, who are accused of mishandling garbage, smoking where they are not allowed and being too loud.
Kyoto is also reported to be considering similar measures. In 2025, Japan welcomed a record number of tourists: 42.7 million.
